A GARDEN ON THE SCHOOL ROOF
The school in Wellington, New Zealand, is quite small. There was no space for a garden anywhere around the building, so the students never had one. Then, last spring, a group of students had a great idea. The roof of their school was big and flat, and nobody ever went up there. Why not plant a garden on the roof?(lines 1–4)
The father of one student, Paul Fraser, works as a gardener. He brought fifty wooden boxes of earth to the school. Together, the students carried every box up to the roof. They chose a name for their new garden: "The Sky Garden."(lines 5–7)
In the boxes, the students planted tomatoes, carrots and flowers. Soon, bees started to visit the flowers. On hot days bees get thirsty, and the students knew this. So they put a few bowls of water between the boxes for the bees.(lines 8–10)
The students watered the plants every morning before class. Two months later, the tomatoes were big and red, and the carrots were ready too. The students could not eat so many vegetables, so they brought them down to the school kitchen. There, the cooks made vegetable soup for everyone in the school.(lines 11–14)
