Text 3 – Tamar's diary

Sunday, September 1st Dear Diary, Today was my first day at Oak Hill Middle School. I was so nervous this morning that I couldn't eat my breakfast. I didn't know anybody, and the building was huge. In the first lesson, I sat alone at the back of the classroom and didn't say a word. Then, during the break, a girl called Maya came over and asked me if I wanted to play basketball with her friends. Later I found out that she lives on my street! The teachers were nice too, but they gave us a lot of homework. On the way home, Maya and I walked together and talked the whole time. I think tomorrow will be much easier. Tamar

Text 4 – A postcard

Dear Grandpa, Greetings from the north! We are staying in a small wooden cabin near a lake. Every morning I wake up to the sound of birds. Yesterday we climbed to the top of a mountain, and from there we could see snow on the higher mountains far away. Today it is raining, so we are visiting a chocolate factory. Mom says we will bring you some! We will be home on Thursday, and I will show you all my photos. Love, Eitan

Subject: My laptop is too slow – please help! Hi everyone. I have a problem with my laptop. It is only two years old, but in the last month it has become really slow. It takes five minutes to start, and when I open the internet, everything stops for a long time. My brother says that I need to buy a new computer, but I don't have enough money. I have hundreds of games and videos on my laptop, and I never turn it off – I just close it. Does anyone have an idea what I can do? Thanks! Ron, 14

Electric Cars: An Old Idea with a New Future

1
Today, we often hear that electric cars are the cars of the future. They are quiet, and they don't need gasoline*. But did you know that electric cars are not a new idea? They are almost 200 years old, and their story is full of surprises.
2
In the 1830s, inventors in Scotland and other countries built the first simple electric carriages**. These early vehicles were slow, and their batteries could not be charged again. Later, better batteries were invented, and in the 1880s real electric cars appeared on city streets. Around the year 1900, about one in three cars in the United States was electric. People liked them because they were quiet and clean. They did not smell bad, and they were easy to start.
3
Why did electric cars almost disappear? There were several reasons. First, in 1908, a new gasoline car came out, and it was much cheaper than an electric car. Then, in 1912, an electric starter was invented for gasoline cars, so drivers did not need to turn a heavy handle anymore. At the same time, oil became cheap, and new roads connected cities that were far apart. Drivers wanted to make long trips, but electric cars could not go far before their batteries were empty. By the 1930s, very few electric cars were left.
4
For about sixty years, almost everybody drove gasoline cars. Then, in the 1990s, people began to worry about air pollution in big cities, and some companies started building electric cars again. In the 2000s, car companies began to use new light batteries that could hold much more energy. Today, many electric cars can drive 400 kilometers before they need to be charged. In 2023, almost one in five new cars sold in the world was electric. In Norway, the number is even higher: in 2024, about nine out of ten new cars were electric.
5
However, there are still some problems. Charging a battery takes longer than filling a tank with gasoline, and in many places there are not enough charging stations. Electric cars are more expensive to buy, too. Also, if the electricity comes from burning coal, the car is not really “clean.” Engineers are working on these problems. In the future, batteries will probably be cheaper, and they will charge in just a few minutes. Maybe one day your family's car will charge itself with energy from the sun!5

Vocabulary / single words
**TASK 1 – Vocabulary** Choose the correct answer to complete each sentence. My grandmother is 80 years old, but she is still very ______. She walks five kilometers every day.
  1. 1
    lazy
  2. 2
    hungry
  3. 3
    healthy
  4. 4
    careful
healthy

המשפט השני נותן את הרמז: "⁦She walks five kilometers every day⁩" – סבתא הולכת חמישה קילומטרים בכל יום.

Vocabulary / single words
Dana got the highest grade in the class, so her parents were very ______ of her.
  1. 1
    proud
  2. 2
    afraid
  3. 3
    tired
  4. 4
    sorry
proud

בנוסף, הצירוף ⁦be proud of someone⁩ (להיות גאה במישהו) מתאים בדיוק למילה ⁦of⁩ שאחרי הרווח.

למה לא ⁦afraid⁩? ⁦afraid of⁩ = מפחדים מ־.

Vocabulary / lexical chunks
When my parents travel abroad, my aunt ______ our dog. She feeds him and takes him for walks.
  1. 1
    gets rid of
  2. 2
    makes fun of
  3. 3
    runs out of
  4. 4
    takes care of
takes care of

⁦take care of⁩ = לטפל ב־, לדאוג ל־.

למה לא ⁦gets rid of⁩? ⁦get rid of⁩ = להיפטר מ־.

למה לא ⁦makes fun of⁩? ⁦make fun of⁩ = לצחוק על מישהו.

למה לא ⁦runs out of⁩? ⁦run out of⁩ = שנגמר למישהו משהו (למשל ⁦run out of milk⁩).

3 נק': ⁦takes care of⁩.

Vocabulary / lexical chunks
My hands are full. Can you ______ me a favor and open the door, please?
  1. 1
    make
  2. 2
    do
  3. 3
    take
  4. 4
    give
do

התשובה הנכונה: ⁦do⁩.

באנגלית אומרים ⁦do someone a favor⁩ – לעשות למישהו טובה.

למה לא ⁦make⁩?

למה לא ⁦take⁩? ⁦take a favor⁩ אינו צירוף קיים באנגלית.

למה לא ⁦give⁩? ⁦give a favor⁩ אינו הצירוף הנכון; ⁦give⁩ מתאים למשל ל־⁦give a present⁩ או ⁦give advice⁩.

3 נק': ⁦do⁩.

Vocabulary / word for a definition
Which word means "a person who visits a place on vacation to see interesting things"?
  1. 1
    tourist
  2. 2
    passenger
  3. 3
    neighbor
  4. 4
    guard
tourist

Vocabulary / opposites
Which word is the OPPOSITE of "arrive"?
  1. 1
    reach
  2. 2
    enter
  3. 3
    leave
  4. 4
    return
leave

למשל: ⁦The train arrives at 8⁩:00 ⁦and leaves at 8⁩:10.

Vocabulary / words in context
Complete each sentence with ONE word from the word bank. There are more words than you need. **Word bank:** crowded – invention – repair – wonderful – share
a.
The bus was so ______ that I had to stand all the way home.
b.
My bike doesn't work. My father will ______ it this weekend, and then I can ride it again.

סעיף a

⁦crowded⁩

⁦repair⁩

Text 1 – A library poster"

**TASK 2 – Short texts** Read the texts below and answer the questions. Mark ONE answer unless you are told to mark more. Answer the open questions in English. Read **Text 1** (a library poster). What may visitors bring into the library?
  1. 1
    A sandwich for lunch
  2. 2
    Water in a closed bottle
  3. 3
    A cup of hot coffee
  4. 4
    A bag of snacks
Water in a closed bottle

Water in a closed bottle⁩.

בכלל מספר 4 בפוסטר כתוב: "⁦Do not bring food into the library. Water in a closed bottle is OK⁩."

למה לא ⁦A sandwich for lunch⁩? כריך הוא אוכל, ובכלל 4 כתוב "⁦Do not bring food⁩".

למה לא ⁦A cup of hot coffee⁩?

למה לא ⁦A bag of snacks⁩?

Water in a closed bottle⁩.

Reading / drawing inferences

Text 1 – A library poster"

Tom and three friends want to prepare a school project together at the library. They will need to talk a lot. Where should they work?
  1. 1
In a reading room, speaking quietly
  2. 2
    At the front desk
  3. 3
Outside, where people take phone calls
  4. 4
    In the Group Room
In the Group Room

In the Group Room⁩.

בכלל מספר 1 כתוב: "⁦Please speak quietly in the reading rooms. Working in a group? Use the Group Room⁩."

למה לא ⁦In a reading room, speaking quietly⁩?

למה לא ⁦At the front desk⁩?

למה לא ⁦Outside, where people take phone calls⁩?

In the Group Room⁩.

Reading / integrating ideas

  2. 2
    ₪100
  3. 3
    ₪120
  4. 4
    ₪130

Friday⁩–⁦Saturday⁩.

Text 2 – A price list at a swimming pool"

Dan is 10 years old. Can he go to swim at Blue Bay alone? Write **Yes** or **No** and explain with information from the price list.

⁦No. Children under 12 must swim with an adult⁩.

2 נק': ⁦No⁩ + נימוק נכון: ילדים מתחת לגיל 12 חייבים לשחות עם מבוגר (למשל: ⁦No, he must swim with an adult⁩ / ⁦No, he is under 12⁩).

0 נק': ⁦Yes⁩; או ⁦No⁩ בלי נימוק; או נימוק שגוי (למשל: ⁦No, because it is too expensive⁩).

Reading / drawing inferences

Text 3 – Tamar's diary"

Read **Text 3** (a diary entry). How did Tamar feel at the END of the day?
  1. 1
More hopeful about her new school
  2. 2
Still very nervous about her new school
  3. 3
Angry because of all the homework
  4. 4
Lonely because she had no one to talk to
More hopeful about her new school

More hopeful about her new school⁩.

בבוקר תמר הייתה לחוצה מאוד ("⁦I was so nervous this morning that I couldn't eat my breakfast⁩"). אבל במהלך היום היא הכירה את מאיה, הלכה איתה הביתה ודיברה איתה כל הדרך, ובסוף היא כותבת: "⁦I think tomorrow will be much easier⁩."

למה לא ⁦Still very nervous about her new school⁩?

למה לא ⁦Angry because of all the homework⁩?

למה לא ⁦Lonely because she had no one to talk to⁩?

More hopeful about her new school⁩.

Reading / literal comprehension

Text 3 – Tamar's diary"

What did Maya ask Tamar during the break?

⁦If she wanted to play basketball with her friends⁩.

She asked Tamar if she wanted to play basketball with her friends⁩.

Then, during the break, a girl called Maya came over and asked me if I wanted to play basketball with her friends⁩."

2 נק': תשובה שמזכירה משחק כדורסל, למשל: ⁦to play basketball⁩ / ⁦if she wants to play basketball with her friends⁩.

0 נק': כל תשובה אחרת (למשל: ⁦where she lives⁩ / ⁦to walk home together⁩).

Reading / drawing inferences

Text 4 – A postcard"

Read **Text 4** (a postcard). Eitan writes: "Mom says we will bring you some!" What will the family bring Grandpa?
  1. 1
    Some photos of the trip
  2. 2
    Some wood from the cabin
  3. 3
    Some fish from the lake
  4. 4
    Some chocolate
Some chocolate

Some chocolate⁩.

המשפט שלפני כן הוא: "⁦Today it is raining, so we are visiting a chocolate factory⁩."

למה לא ⁦Some photos of the trip⁩? איתן כותב שהוא "יראה" לסבא את התמונות (⁦I will show you all my photos⁩), לא שיביאו לו אותן במתנה, וזה מופיע במשפט אחר.

למה לא ⁦Some wood from the cabin⁩?

למה לא ⁦Some fish from the lake⁩?

Some chocolate⁩.

Text 5 – A post on a computer-help forum"

Read **Text 5** (a forum post). What is Ron's problem?
  1. 1
His laptop does not turn on at all.
  2. 2
    His laptop works very slowly.
  3. 3
He lost all his games and videos.
  4. 4
    His brother broke his laptop.
His laptop works very slowly.

His laptop works very slowly⁩.

כבר בכותרת כתוב "⁦My laptop is too slow⁩", ובפוסט: "⁦in the last month it has become really slow. It takes five minutes to start⁩".

למה לא ⁦His laptop does not turn on at all⁩?

למה לא ⁦He lost all his games and videos⁩? להפך – יש לו "⁦hundreds of games and videos⁩" על המחשב.

למה לא ⁦His brother broke his laptop⁩?

His laptop works very slowly⁩.

Reading / critical thinking

Text 5 – A post on a computer-help forum"

Four people answered Ron. Which reply gives Ron the MOST useful advice?
  1. 1
"Listen to your brother and buy a new laptop. The new ones are really fast."
  2. 2
"My laptop is slow too. It makes me so angry!"
  3. 3
"Delete the games and videos you don't use, and turn the laptop off at night. Try it for a week."
  4. 4
"Stop using your laptop and do everything on your phone."
"Delete the games and videos you don't use, and turn the laptop off at night. Try it for a week."

Delete the games and videos you don't use, and turn the laptop off at night. Try it for a week⁩."

• רון כתב "⁦I have hundreds of games and videos on my laptop⁩" – העצה למחוק את מה שהוא לא משתמש בו מתאימה לזה.

• רון כתב "⁦I never turn it off⁩ – ⁦I just close it⁩" – העצה לכבות את המחשב בלילה מתאימה לזה.

I don't have enough money⁩".

למה לא "⁦Listen to your brother and buy a new laptop⁩"?

למה לא "⁦My laptop is slow too. It makes me so angry⁩!"?

למה לא "⁦Stop using your laptop and do everything on your phone⁩"?

3 נק': ⁦the reply about deleting games and videos and turning the laptop off⁩.

How long each trail is
4
The time of the last entry

התשובות הנכונות: ⁦How long each trail is⁩ ו־⁦The time of the last entry⁩.

• אורך המסלולים: בעלון כתוב "⁦the Waterfall Trail⁩ (1 ⁦km⁩ ...), ⁦the River Trail⁩ (4 ⁦km⁩) ⁦and the Eagle Trail⁩ (9 ⁦km⁩ ...)".

• שעת הכניסה האחרונה: כתוב "(⁦last entry at 16⁩:00)".

למה לא ⁦How to get to the reserve by bus⁩?

למה לא ⁦The names of the birds in the valley⁩?

למה לא ⁦The price of a guided tour⁩?

4 נק': סומנו שתי התשובות הנכונות בלבד (⁦How long each trail is⁩ + ⁦The time of the last entry⁩).

Text 6 – A brochure for a nature reserve"

Pine Valley wants to have a "Family Day" in spring. Suggest ONE new activity for this day. Explain why it is a good idea, using information from the brochure. Activity: ______ Why it is a good idea: ______

⁦Open answer, e.g⁩.: ⁦A guided bird-watching morning in the tower, because families can see birds there and it is quiet⁩.

• ⁦Activity⁩: ⁦A short family walk on the Waterfall Trail with a guide. Why⁩: ⁦The trail is easy and only 1 km, so it is good for families with small children⁩.

• ⁦Activity⁩: ⁦A competition to take the best photo of wild flowers. Why⁩: ⁦In spring the valley is full of wild flowers, and you take photos without picking them⁩.

• ⁦Activity⁩: ⁦A bird-watching game for children in the tower. Why⁩: ⁦There is a bird-watching tower, and children can learn to be quiet near the birds⁩.

מה לא מתאים: פעילות ששוברת את הכללים בעלון, למשל ⁦swimming in the river⁩ (כתוב "⁦do not swim in the river⁩"), ⁦picnic with your dog⁩ ("⁦Dogs are not allowed⁩"), או ⁦a music party near the tower⁩ ("⁦keep quiet near the bird-watching tower⁩").

  2. 2
Electric cars do not need gasoline.
  3. 3
    Electric cars are quiet.
  4. 4
Electric cars are the cars of the future.
Electric cars were first built almost 200 years ago.

Electric cars were first built almost 200 years ago⁩.

בפסקה 1 הכותב שואל: "⁦But did you know that electric cars are not a new idea? They are almost 200 years old⁩". השאלה "⁦did you know⁩…?"

למה לא ⁦Electric cars do not need gasoline⁩? / ⁦Electric cars are quiet⁩?

למה לא ⁦Electric cars are the cars of the future⁩? זה מה שאנשים בדרך כלל אומרים היום ("⁦we often hear that⁩…")

Scotland⁩.

בפסקה 2 כתוב: "⁦In the 1830s, inventors in Scotland and other countries built the first simple electric carriages⁩."

תשובות נכונות: ⁦they were quiet⁩ / ⁦they were clean⁩ / ⁦they did not smell bad⁩ / ⁦they were easy to start⁩.

בפסקה 2 כתוב: "⁦People liked them because they were quiet and clean. They did not smell bad, and they were easy to start⁩."

1 – ⁦first electric carriages⁩; 2 – ⁦one in three cars in the US is electric⁩; 3 – ⁦a cheap gasoline car comes out⁩; 4 – ⁦very few electric cars are left⁩; 5 – ⁦companies build electric cars again⁩; 6 – ⁦light batteries are developed⁩.

1. ⁦Inventors build the first simple electric carriages⁩.

2. ⁦About one in three cars in the United States is electric⁩. ("⁦Around the year 1900⁩", פסקה 2)

3. ⁦A cheap gasoline car comes out⁩. ("⁦in 1908⁩", פסקה 3)

6. ⁦Car companies begin to use light batteries that can hold more energy⁩. ("⁦In the 2000s⁩", פסקה 4)

Reading / integrating ideas
According to paragraph 3, why were electric cars NOT a good choice for drivers who wanted to travel between cities?
  1. 1
They were not allowed on the new roads.
  2. 2
Drivers had to turn a heavy handle to start them.
  3. 3
The oil they needed became too expensive.
  4. 4
Their batteries became empty before they could go far.
Their batteries became empty before they could go far.

Their batteries became empty before they could go far⁩.

בפסקה 3 יש שני פרטים שצריך לחבר: "⁦new roads connected cities that were far apart⁩" – הכבישים החדשים חיברו ערים רחוקות, ו־"⁦Drivers wanted to make long trips, but electric cars could not go far before their batteries were empty⁩" – הנהגים רצו לנסוע רחוק, אבל הסוללות של המכוניות החשמליות התרוקנו מהר מדי.

למה לא ⁦They were not allowed on the new roads⁩?

למה לא ⁦Drivers had to turn a heavy handle to start them⁩?

למה לא ⁦The oil they needed became too expensive⁩?

Their batteries became empty before they could go far⁩.

Paragraph 3 explains why people stopped buying electric cars. Write TWO different reasons.
a.
Reason 1: ______
b.
Reason 2: ______

סעיף a

⁦A new gasoline car was much cheaper than an electric car⁩.

In 1908 a new gasoline car came out, and it was much cheaper than an electric car⁩.

⁦Electric cars could not go far before their batteries were empty⁩.

Drivers wanted to make long trips, but electric cars could not go far before their batteries were empty⁩.

• "⁦a new gasoline car came out, and it was much cheaper than an electric car⁩"

• "⁦an electric starter was invented for gasoline cars, so drivers did not need to turn a heavy handle anymore⁩"

• "⁦oil became cheap⁩"

• "⁦electric cars could not go far before their batteries were empty⁩"

In paragraph 2, the writer says: "People liked **them** because they were quiet and clean." Who or what does the word "them" refer to?

  3. 3
    Inventors
  4. 4
    City streets
Electric cars

Electric cars⁩.

המשפט שלפני כן הוא: "⁦Around the year 1900, about one in three cars in the United States was electric⁩." מיד אחר כך: "⁦People liked them because they were quiet and clean. They did not smell bad, and they were easy to start⁩."

הממציאים הוזכרו בתחילת הפסקה, אבל התיאור ⁦quiet and clean⁩ ו־⁦easy to start⁩ לא מתאר אנשים.

1: "⁦electric cars are not a new idea? They are almost 200 years old⁩".

2: "⁦In the 1830s, inventors ... built the first simple electric carriages⁩."

2: "⁦Around the year 1900, about one in three cars in the United States was electric⁩."

Electric Cars: An Old Idea with a New Future"

What is the MAIN purpose of the text?
  1. 1
To convince readers to buy an electric car now
  2. 2
To explain how to charge an electric car at home
  3. 3
To tell the story of electric cars from the past to the future
  4. 4
To compare the prices of electric and gasoline cars
To tell the story of electric cars from the past to the future

To tell the story of electric cars from the past to the future⁩.

למה לא ⁦To convince readers to buy an electric car now⁩?

למה לא ⁦To explain how to charge an electric car at home⁩?

למה לא ⁦To compare the prices of electric and gasoline cars⁩?

To tell the story of electric cars from the past to the future⁩.

Which sentence from paragraph 5 is a GUESS about the future and NOT a fact?
  1. 1
"Charging a battery takes longer than filling a tank with gasoline."
  2. 2
"In many places there are not enough charging stations."
  3. 3
"Engineers are working on these problems."
  4. 4
"In the future, batteries will probably be cheaper."
"In the future, batteries will probably be cheaper."

In the future, batteries will probably be cheaper⁩."

למה לא "⁦Charging a battery takes longer than filling a tank with gasoline⁩"?

למה לא "⁦In many places there are not enough charging stations⁩"?

למה לא "⁦Engineers are working on these problems⁩"?

(because) ______
b.
(although) ______
c.
(when) ______

סעיף a

⁦I use my phone every day because I like to send messages to my friends⁩.

I use my phone every day because I like to send messages to my friends⁩.

• חלק ראשון: ⁦I use my phone every day⁩ (נושא I, פועל ⁦use⁩).

• חלק שני: ⁦because I like to send messages⁩… (נושא I, פועל ⁦like⁩).

טעות נפוצה: לכתוב רק את חלק הסיבה, למשל "⁦Because I like games⁩."

⁦Although I love computer games, I play only on weekends⁩.

Although I love computer games, I play only on weekends⁩.

אפשר גם לכתוב: ⁦I play only on weekends although I love computer games⁩.

טעויות נפוצות: להוסיף ⁦but⁩ אחרי ⁦although⁩ ("⁦Although I love games, but I play⁩…") – באנגלית משתמשים רק באחת מהן; או לכתוב שני רעיונות שאינם מנוגדים ("⁦Although I love games, I play every day⁩").

⁦When I have a problem with my homework, I look for help on the internet⁩.

When I have a problem with my homework, I look for help on the internet⁩.

אפשר גם: ⁦I look for help on the internet when I have a problem with my homework⁩.

טעות נפוצה: לשאול שאלה ("⁦When do you use the internet⁩?")

Together, The next morning⁩.

• המשפטים קצרים וברורים, בזמן עבר (⁦was, smiled, cleaned, drove⁩), עם מילות קישור (⁦because, and⁩).
